What is caramel sauce?

Classic caramel sauce is made by caramelizing granulated sugar (with no water) then carefully adding warm cream. Although delicious, this method takes time and patience; two things I don’t always have. When I need a quick caramel sauce, I make the easy version described below. Store extra sauce in the refrigerator. If it gets too thick, simply heat for a few seconds in the microwave.

Easy Caramel Sauce

Classic caramel sauce is made by caramelizing granulated sugar (with no water) then carefully adding warm cream. Although delicious, this method takes time and patience; two things I don’t always have. When I need a quick caramel sauce, I make the easy version described below. Store extra sauce in the refrigerator. If it gets too thick, simply heat for a few seconds in the microwave.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • ½ cup brown sugar, firmly packed
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • 2 teaspoons Grand Marnier

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the brown sugar and stir to combine.
  2. Add the cream and stir to combine. Bring to a low boil to melt the sugar completely.
  3. Remove from the heat and stir in the Grand Marnier. Cool to room temperature and serve.
